What is this test?

The HbA1C test, also called the “glycosylated haemoglobin” test, measures your average blood glucose level over the previous 8-12 weeks and gives an indication of your long-term blood glucose control.

The process whereby glucose (sugar) attaches to haemoglobin in your red blood cells is called the “glycation pathway”, therefore the term “glycated haemoglobin”. Normal levels of blood glucose produce a normal amount of glycated haemoglobin. As the average amount of glucose in the blood increases, the fraction of glycated haemoglobin (HBA1C) also increases – this process happens in a predictable way and serves as an indicator of when action should be taken. Unlike a regular blood glucose (sugar) test, the HbA1c test is unaffected by short-term changes; this means that with this test you are able to measure if you are generally doing well in controlling your blood sugar levels over a defined period.
